Subject: [MER] RE: List Census Capel Garmon
Hello Gwenda,
The parish registers for Capel Garmon have been transcribed by Clwyd
Family
History Society in three volumes
Vol 1 Baptisms 1696-1769; Marriages 1696-1752; Burials 1696-1768
Vol 2 Baptisms 1769-1842
Vol 3 Marriages 1754-1812; Burials 1769-1841
www.clwydfhs.org.uk/
Latter Parish Registers can be seen in the Records Office at Rhuthin Gaol;
Baptisms to 1910, Marriages to 1969 and Burials to 1869
I have had a quick look through the burials and baptisms which have
details
of Abode included but I could not find any baptisms from Bryn Coch.
If
your
Thomases are related to the Tanycastell family it is possible that
they
were
nonconformists, as Tanycastell was a breeding ground for many
Methodist
preachers who served in Wales and the USA including the famous John Jones,
Talysarn.
There are only two burials from Bryn Coch:
5 May 1827 Robert Jones aged 83
18 Mar 1813 Richard Jones aged 21
I couldn't find a baptism for any Edward Thomas in or about 1813,
unfortunately there are three possible baptisms for a Gwen Thomas about
1816
8th Jan 1815 Gwen the daughter of Hugh Thomas Ostler and Catherine of
Berhiddion
12th Mar 1815 Gwen the daughter of Richard Thomas, sawyer and Jane of Tai
Canol, Llan.
18th Nov 1815 Gwen the daughter of Thomas Roberts and Catherine, farmers,
of
Llanerch Goch (some people in Capel Garmon were still using
patronymic
surnames in this period).
There are a number of people on the Clwyd list researching families in
Capel
Garmon, have you tried your query there?
All the best
Alwyn

In response to Alwyn's request -
My name is Gwenda Williams (nee Osborne Thomas) originally from
Bl. Ffestiniog, but now living in Fairbourne.
My father's father, Edward Thomas was born in Bryn Coch, Capel Garmon. and
he was the eldest son of William Thomas and Catherine, Tan y Castell,
Dolwyddelen.
In the churchyard in Capel Garmon there is a tombstone depicting the
burial
place of EDWARD THOMAS - Bryn Coch 1813 - 1850 and also
GWEN THOMAS died Jan 1905 age 89 years.
I think these are my G.G.grandparents.[My grandparents were also Edward
and
Gwen Thomas] - Confusing!
I have failed to find Bryn Coch or anyone who knows its whereabouts. The
church is now closed and I wonder how I can get more information about the
family who lived there.
According to the 1851 census GWEN THOMAS was recently widowed and was the
mother of twins aged 4, a daughter aged 1yr and a baby 1 month old. In the
home was another son age12 - Samuel Jones - and a niece Jane Jones age
11yrs. One of the twins - Catherine, married Wil bach Tan y Castell and
they
are my great grandparents.
This woman Gwen Thomas seems to have had such a hard life {was Samuel an
illegitimate son ar had she lost a previous husband?}She is recorded as
being widowed with 5 children and her occupation is a 'charwoman' -yet she
lived to be 89 yrs old!
I am intrigued with the facts found in this census and I wonder would more
information be found in the Church records and how would I be able to
access
them?
I am sure there are many different ways where information about one's past
relatives may be found but I am fairly new to this hobby -' hel achau'.
Hope someone can point me in the right direction.
Gwenda
