The Established Church is the Church of England. (The CofE is still part of
the Establishment in England, but was disestablished in Wales in the 1920's
and is now the Church in Wales).
The ministry of the Established Church is often complicated. It may be a
local, un ordained, landlord who took the moneys raised from the church who
inherited "rights of clergy" from ancestors who took the pickings when
monasteries were made dissolute in the 16th centaury.
It may be an active rector or vicar (senior parish clergyman), or an
absentee rector or vicar who had the job as a sinecure from a genteel family
member who owned the "rights of the living" as a picking from the
dissolution of the monasteries or bargains from the crown.
Most often it would be the parish curate (junior parish clergyman). Who
should be an ordained man and a graduate from either Oxford or Cambridge.
The curate would be the labourer in the parish who actually did the
"ministering" - held Sunday services - baptised, married and buried the
locals.
The easiest way of finding out who an active (rather than absentee) Vicar or
Rector was and who the curate was is to consult the parish registers to see
who was signing off the bap-mar-burs at the time and checking the name in
the alumni lists of Oxford (most common for Wales) or Cambridge collages.
Difficult from California, I know. Has any list member got a note or a page
image from Llanuwchlyn PRs between 1700 and 1720 with details of who the
active minister was?
All the best
