Subject: Margaret dau Richard JONES bap Llanelltyd Dolgellau 1834/35?
Hi Alwyn,
I wonder if some kind soul with access to the early parish registers for
Llanelltyd, Dolgellau would look for a baptism for me?
I have just received the certificate for my grandmother's grandparents
marriage in Machynlleth on 28 April 1855:
John Ashton, age 24, bachelor, shoemaker of Machynlleth, son of Daniel
Ashton, shoemaker (of Llanbrynmair) married in Machynlleth Register Office,
Margaret Jones, age 21, spinster of Machynlleth, daughter of Richard Jones,
laborer.
Previously, I knew from kind people on this and other lists that the 1881
census showed Margaret as 47 and born in Dolgellau and the 1861 census
showed her as 27 and born in Llanelltyd but they didn't reveal her maiden
name. The family thought she had been either a Richards or Griffiths which
led to many futile earlier searches.
Now that I have her family name JONES and know with considerable
certainty that Margaret Jones was born to Richard Jones about 1834/35,
because of her age 21 at marriage on 28 April 1855, age 27 on the 8 April
1861 census and 47 in 1881, I feel that I have my best chance of
identifying her. However I do realize that there could be more than one
Richard Jones baptizing a daughter Margaret in 1834/35 in Dolgellau. What's
more, I suspect that the baptism might have been in a chapel, because the
couple married in a Register office in 1855, although that might have been
because John Ashton was a chapel organist in Machynlleth.
I have just searched the North Wales BMD again, this time for Margaret's
dad Richard Jones death in Machynlleth and found about 50 of them between
1855 and 1890, with only 4 years missing any. Margaret's birth about
1834/35 to Richard Jones in Llanelltyd, Dolgellau is definitely my best
chance!
Thanks, Tony in White Rock, BC
