Thanks again, Doreen, that's certainly them in the census records.
Just by the way, I only found my path to this branch of my family through a
handwritten record someone (perhaps my late mother) seemed to have recorded
from someone's personal recollection (possibly her late cousin from
Penrhyndeudraeth). That listed my grandmother's parents and grandparents.
But the farm was rendered as 'Geest fan' and it took me a while (plus poring
over an Ordnance Survey map) to twig that it was 'Cistfaen/Gistfaen'.
Young Edward WILLIAMS (the one aged 8 in the 1861 census, my great
grandfather) moved to Penrhyndeudraeth to work in the slate quarries,
married a Catherine DAVIES and spawned quite a large brood, the last of
whom, my great-aunt Ruth, died about 15 years ago, aged 91.
There was another boy, William WILLIAMS, born a few years later (and
recorded on your 1871 transcription at Gistfaen). Interestingly, I have
recently made contact with one of his descendants via Internet research.
I could not help but feel sorry for their father, Evan (the butter-merchant
in 1861), when I found he was 54 years old, widowed and the only occupant
of Gistfaen in 1881. My handwritten family record also showed that two
others of his boys, David and a younger Evan, had 'gone to America'.
Another, John, had gone to Birkenhead where he was welding in a workshop. I
should think that tracing what became of any of them would be quite a
challenge.
