I don't like the intrusiveness of
Ancestry.com either. Full marks for being
smart enough to get the contracts, but nought out of ten for personal
appeal.
Or am I being a curmudgeon?
Bah! Humbug!

Subject: [MER] Censuses on-line
"Family Tree" magazine, February 2005, pg 50 : refers to
The National
Archives website [
www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/census ] -
"In addition to the 1901 Census, the indexes and facsimiles of the 1881
and 1891 censuses can now be searched and viewed at this site [free index
search, pay for image]. Look out for the 1841 to 1871 Census records on
The National Archives site in the near future."
When I checked this website I did indeed find the 1901 census as I have
used before, but entry to the 1881 & 1891 censuses leads to Ancestry.co.uk
with their usual charges. Somehow I don't feel too happy about this
arrangement, not sure why, maybe The National Archives website should be a
bit more open about what is happening. "Ancestry" charges seem to be based
on a fixed cost per printout, or unlimited access for a quarterly or
annual subscription. Is this a good idea??
