Firstly, a big thank you to Alwyn for putting this census on line as it solved a marriage
certificate puzzle for me (and taught me to look much more carefully at dates)!
My gt grandmother, Elin LLOYD, appears on the 1871 Llanelltyd census as an unmarried
domestic servant (24) working for Roderick and Elizabeth HUMPHREYS. She was born in 1846
at Lletyr Wenci in Llanaber and obviously moved to Llanelltyd in search of work. Perhaps
it was here that she met my gt grandather, Owen WILLIAMS (b abt 1842 Llanddwywe - yes, he
of the " WILLIAMS toothache fame") as he was farming at Bontddu in 1871.
Owen and Ellin married in the Parish Church at Llanelltyd on 15 May 1871 and I had always
been puzzled as to why she married there (and not Llanaber) and why none of their parents
were present.
Both Ellin's parents, Gwen (nee EDWARDS) and Robert LLOYD were listed in the 1871
census living at Tyddyn Ddu, Llanaber but it wasn't until I was looking at
Ellin's m/c that it struck me - the date on her m/c and that on her father's
gravestone in Llanaber was EXACTLY THE SAME - yes her wedding day! No wonder her parents
weren't present at her wedding - her poor mother was probably busy burying Ellin's
father. So now I understand why Roderick HUMPHREYS (her employer) was listed as a witness
- he probably stood in for her father.
As for the other witness, Griffith WILLIAMS - could he be a brother or relative to Owen
(one of Owen's sons was named Gruffydd)? Alas Owen and his parents are still one big,
big black hole in my family history, apart from the fact that his father was also an Owen
WILLIAMS!
On with the hunt ............
