Jan,
These aren't streets but farms or former farms on which there may have been
at one time more than one house, or a small terrace in the village:
Carleg (correct as it is)
Cefnfaes (not Cefnfues) - this would have been the smaller house on the land
rather than the 'plas' called Cefnfaes on which it stood.
Penyglannau / Penyglanau /Penglanau/Penglannau - all seen as correct in
their period but not your spelling of Panyglanan - again the smaller house
not the plas
Pantyclegar (correct as it is and a row of several houses, a terrace rather
than a street ) - houses which belonged to a connection of the same family
that owned Cefnfaes and Penyglanau
Bronturnor (correct as it is)
None of these should have St after their name. They are one word names. My
family lived at and owned Cefnfaes, Penyglanau and Pantyclegar at various
times in this period and earlier but I do not recognise these as part of
that family, though there was one daughter who married a John Morris - a
different John.
I can't quite work out how you have definitely connected Morris Owen Morris
to this family unless you have some other evidence, bearing in mind there
were more than one family of Morris's in the parish (or in and out of the
parish eg from Trawsfynydd) in this period but the main family you list does
seem to be the same one from one census to the next. If a farm was small or
on poor land or the family lost the tenancy for whatever reason (including
poverty) then it would be not unusual to become or alternate with being a
miner or quarryman which would pay more as the slate quarries prospered in
the area. But at other times there would be a decline in the slate industry
and it would be back to farming. I would guess that the rent on Pantyclegar
and Carleg would be less than on the other addresses. It is very possible
that Rees/Rice Morris was actually doing both occupations all the time but
that he varied at various times which he (or the enumerator) took to be his
primary occupation and primary income. How many of us remember exactly what
details we give from one census to the next?
The fact that Jane the mother is born in Llanelltyd (other than 1841 when
the parish was not listed - born in the county or not was the question) is a
good indicator of continuity.
I might have information which is relevant to you or worth following up if
you are sure this is your family. For instance, a quick look now showed I
had noted a baptism in July 1814 of Catherine a daughter to Morris Owen and
Mary, Carleg, Labourer in case it was relevant to another Morris Owen in my
family. I later came to the conclusion it was unlikely there was a link. Let
me know if you are sure and I will check over the weekend what else I might
have.
I hope this is of help.
Rhian
PS Couldn't see the entry for Penyglanau 1861.

Subject: [MER] Maentwrog street spellings? MORRIS family
Hi researchers,
Could someone please help me with the correct spelling of these street
names in Maentwrog, Merionethshire, North Wales:
Carleg, Cefnfues, Panyglanan, Pantyclegar and Bronturnor? Also, was it
common for the head of household to change jobs from miner to farmer to
miner or do I have the wrong Rees[e] MORRIS?
Many THANKS :) in advance,
Jan Jordan <jnrose(a)webtv.net>
