Dear Listers
My great nain, Ann(e) JONES was born at Penycoed, Corwen in 1854. On the 1861 census she
is a 6 year old living with her parents Hugh & Gwen JONES at Berthddu No 1, in the
township of Ucheldrof. I haven't been able to find her on the 1871 census.
In 1871, her parents were living at Berthddu Cottage, Hugh being a gamekeeper for the Rug
Estate(Wynne's?).
An aunt recently told me that Ann worked for the Wynne's. At one time there was fever
prevalent in Corwen(?) and the Wynne family wanted to get one of their daughter's away
from the area. My g nain accompanied the daughter.
In the 1871 Census, Corwen, schedule 23, Rug Mansion, it says that 10 persons were
temporary absent and also there were 4 servants living there.
Where had the 10 persons gone to temporarily? Was it due to a fever epidemic? Perhaps my
great nain was with them, as a maid? The owners of Rug Mansion had relatives in Nannau,
Llanfachreth and Glynllifon, Caernarfon, also in the Lleyn Peninsula at Gwynfryn near
Llanystumdwy and am sure other places in North Wales.
Any help in finding g nain on the 1871 census will be gratefully appreciated.
Regards
Peter Evans
