Many thanks to Alwyn and Karen for your really helpful suggestions
suggestions - both very productive.
Took a look at the North Wales BDM site. Sibling birth places after 1837
were Furnace, Eglwysfach, Dovey and Llawrin.
Morgan Williams produced the fewest options - census records said he was
born Furnace / Dovey c1839 - found an entry for 1840 in the Powys -
Machynlleth reg. district. A bit of research on the net suggests this may
be the right one.
Searched the Historical Directories for Machynlleth and found a couple of
possible Griffith Williams - one a farmer living in Penegoes - the census
lists him as an ag lab - perhaps he was a retired "manufacturer". The other
was an Inn Keeper - less sure of this man, it doesn't fit with tea drinking
non - conformists.
Really enjoying the challenge of searching in Wales...
Thanks again
Linda

If you have one of your Thomas Williams' siblings born after 1837
in Pennal
try searching for him/her on the North Wales BMD site,
http://www.northwalesbmd.org.uk/births.html
restricting your search to people whose records are in DOLGELLAU
registration office (this is done by a drop down list).
The list of names given will include details of the sub-registration
district in which the people were born. Conveniently Pennal is a
sub-district (although much wider than the village itself)
Results will look something like this
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Reference
WILLIAMS Cathrine Barmouth Gwynedd - Dolgellau BRM/1/23
WILLIAMS Elisabeth Talyllyn Gwynedd - Dolgellau TLLN/1/30
WILLIAMS Hugh Pennal Gwynedd - Dolgellau PNL/1/33
Extract the appropriate names and reference numbers from Pennal sub-district
and send them in an e-mail to the very helpful registrar at Dolgellau
dylannjones(a)gwynedd.gov.uk
He will be able to tell you, which if any of the appropriate Williams' you
find had a father called Griffith.
All the best

Hello
New to the list and very new to research in Wales and I'm struggling and
looking for some advise...
My interest is in a WILLIAMS family...
Thomas Williams was born Pennal c1832 - unable to identify his marriage but
his wife was Eleanor Roberts (born Mold). Their first child was born
Bolton Lancashire 1865 - subsequent children in Bistre Mold.
I've been unable to find Thomas in 1861 but did find several of his
siblings in the Bolton area of Lancashire 1861. Details vary from census to
census but Pennal / Eglwysfach / Furnace / Llawrin / Dovey / Machynleth
are fairly consistent, dates 1829 -1846.
The menfolk were Tea Merchants / travellers and appear quite comfortably
off - married sisters were in similar circumstances.
Marriage certificates for two of the siblings indicate their father was
Griffith Williams a Manufacturer. I had hoped to get a birth certificate
but a search of the GRO indexes reveal
an overwhelming number of entries.
How do other listers tackle the sheer volume of events for a given name
when the birth year is uncertain ??? I am keen to discover what Griffith
was manufacturing!!
Many thanks
Linda
