I have recently obtained a copy of a 1914 marriage certificate, and would be very grateful
for any help in identifying one of the families involved.
Details : "14th February 1914 at Ebenezer Chapel Llanuwchllyn [aka 'yr Hen
Gapel' or 'Rhydyfedwen Chapel'] -
Thomas JONES, 47 years, farm labourer, of Coedladur Llanuwchllyn, son of
Robert JONES (deceased), farmer,
and Margaret Ellen JONES, 28 years, spinster, of Bryngwyn Llanuwchllyn, daughter
of William JONES, general labourer."
I have located Coedladur and Bryngwyn, and believe that these were not in fact necessarily
the family homes of the groom & bride, but simply the farms where they worked and
lived at the time they married. I believe that I have identified Thomas JONES as the son
of Robert JONES (born c1850) of Llwyn Llwydyn, Llanuwchllyn : age 47 in 1914 would give
year of birth as c1867, ie age c14 in 1881 census. There is a Thomas JONES shown as age 15
at Llwyn Llwydyn in the 1881 census. My (very distant) connection is through Thomas's
sister Jane (1858-1937) who married Evan JONES of Llechweddalchen, Llanuwchllyn.
I have been unable to identify Margaret Ellen JONES' family. Can anyone help me
please? Age 28 in 1914 would give year of birth c1886; father William JONES.
Registers of Electors show Thomas & Margaret Ellen at Nantyreithin, Llandderfel, from
1920 to 1936. From 1937 to 1939 Thomas is no longer listed on the Registers (presumably he
had died), while Margaret Ellen & her daughter Hefina (born c1915) are shown at Pen y
Braich, Llandderfel. By 1950 Margaret Ellen & Hefina were living in Llandrillo. At
some time in the 1950s Hefina JONES married John David EDWARDS of Llandrillo (1906-1995);
she died in 1988 & is buried in Llandrillo cemetery. I do not know when Thomas &
Margaret Ellen died (would very much like to know), but I understand that they were buried
at Rama Chapel cemetery in Llandderfel : I have looked there (also in the village
cemetery), but have been unable to find their grave.
Written in hope,
Jeff Delves
