The U in the condition of Catherine Jones Servant would probably be
Unmarried rather than Unknown - just in case it crops up again for a member
of your family.

Subject: [MER] 1851 census entry
Dear List:
Would someone who is a member of
ancestry.com look at the entry I am
giving
below and tell me what s/he thinks is the occupation of one of those
listed
for a family living in Merionethshire in the 1851 census? I am American
so I am
not familiar with the format of the UK censuses. I copied this entry by
hand.
The entry goes like this:
Name of street, place, or road, and name or number of home: 65 Tyncae
Richart Davies Head Condition: Wdr Age: 67
Rank, Profession or Occupation: Farmer 11 acres
Born Celynin Merionethshire
Lewis Davies son Condition: Mar(ried?) Age: 37
Rank, Profession or Occupation: __ariner
Corn: Celynin, Merionthshire
Catherine Jones Servant Condition: U (unknown) Age: 26
Rank, Profession, or Occupation: House servant
Born: Celynin, Merionethshire
My problem is with the occupation of Lewis DAVIES. It looked to me as
though
the first two letters were ch. However, I know that Lewis DAVIES was a
mariner, and the rest of the word looks like mariner without the m at the
beginning. The handwriting is not very good, and it is possible that what
looked like
ch is actually a capital M. I hope so! If so, finding this entry is a
great
advance in my Welsh genealogy.
Also, what is the significance of the number 65? And what kind of place is
Tyncae? What parish is it in? Llangelynin?
Thank you very much.
Jayne
