These censuses are a puzzle, mums family are also from Merioneth, the
village of Llanuwchllyn. When I first saw the 1881 census, I discovered
my Great grandfather Henry Davies, living at the farm Hafod yr Wyn, with
his wife and who I presumed was his grandmother, as she was 46 years his
senior. When I told my mum, she said the older woman was his mother, who
gave birth to Henry, when she was 46. He wasn't conceived after a career
delay or fertility treatment! According to mum, Henry was a big
strapping man who was in his 90's when he died. Bob Hughes

Subject: [MER] 1851 census [No Viruses detected]
Dear Listers,
I've come across an 1851 census enumeration that has me stumped and I'm
hoping that someone may know something or be able to figure this out.
District 2D, Festiniog, Merioneth
Tyn'ddol
Margaret Williams- Head- widow- 82- farmer- Caernarvon, Dolwyddelan
Robert Evans- son-in-law-marr- 76 or 71 or 70- farm labourer- Merioneth,
Festiniog
Jane Evans- daughter-Unm-88 or 38- Merioneth, Festiniog
Cathrine Evans- daughter- unm- 17-dress maker- Merioneth, Festiniog
What I know:
Margaret WILLIAMS is her maiden name, she was married to Owen EVANS. He
was
buried 18 May 1824 at age 67. They were married 7 Nov 1791 in Llanykil
Parish Church. Margaret was baptised 2 April 1769 in Dolwyddelan.
Questions:
1) Does son-in-law always mean that or is it possible that it could mean
stepson? Could Robert be the son from a first marriage for Owen Evans
when
he was very young?
2) Can anyone tell from looking at the census image on ancestry or
elsewhere
what the age for Jane is for sure? It looks more like 88 but 38 fits in
better.
3) Jane Evans is listed as the daughter of Margaret Williams but I can't
find her Baptism in the BTs for Festiniog in 1813 or thereabouts if she
is
38 and she can't be older than her mother so the 88 doesn't make sense.
Is
it possible that the enumerator meant that Robert was her father?
4) Catherine is age 17 in 1851. Margaret would have been 65 years old
when
she had Catherine if she were in fact her mother.
What would have been the nonconformist chapels in the area of
Ffestiniog?
Any suggestions will be very welcome and info even more so!
Thanks,
Gwen Cunningham
