Hi Kay,
Yes, you are correct. Llanddwywe is the name of the village, but it was once
a parish. I lies south of Llanenddwyn going towards Barmouth. In fact,
Llanddwywe lies about 5 miles between Harlech and Barmouth. The church if of
the established church variety, not conformist, and there are quite a few
gravestones in it's grounds. It lies across the road from the gate houses
belonging to the old Gorsygedol estate. A long steep road leads up between the
houses towards the Manor house, and also to some farms on either side of the
road.
Best regards,
Maureen, whose own ancestors lie in the area of Ardudwy.
Hi Maureen,
Although I now live in Leicester I was born in Barmouth, My Father was a Dyffryn boy
and in his time has worked on most of the farms from Egryn Abbey Tal y bont to the other
side of Dyffryn. Our family have lived in Dyffryn for 5 generations most of them now
reside in both Llanddwywe and Llanenddwyn Churchyards My Gt Gt grandparents William
Henry& Mary Ann Mitchelmore
lived in the gate house of Gors-y -Gedol Hall which is in front of the hall at the top
of the drive the two houses at the bottom are lodges and not as old as the gatehouse. They
moved later to live in the Llanddwywe Inn this is the Farmhouse behind the church and Mary
in the cencus is listed as the Innkeeper. Gors-y Gedol Hall was oven by the Vaughan Family
and then the Ansells{brewers} in the church there is a memorial Chapel to the Vaughan
family.
As I said earlier I now live in Humberstone Leicester and I have recently found
information that the Daughter of Gors y Gedol married in my Church and lived in the manor
house of Humberstone. So even in those days the world was a small place
With regard to the parishes of Llanddwywe and Llanenddwyn I don't Know when they
became known as Dyffyn Ardudwy did you know that during the1920's 1930's that
Dyffryn was called Dyffryn on Sea by the Cambrian coast Railway I have a photo of my
father standing on the station platform under the sign. I hope this has been of interest
to you and if anyone else has any information on either the Mitchelmore's or
Llanddwywe then I would be very interested to correspond
Regards Leslie Mitchelmore
