I recall that there was a request re DRDaniel on this List a few weeks ago
and I knew that somewhere in this house I had some information abot the
family. I have now found it but I do not know whether Gwen still needs it.
Anyway there was an article in Y Cyfnod (Bala paper) by W J Edwards on
12/3/1982 and this is it in translation:-
D R DANIEL'S MOTHER
If I were to ask what is the connection between the cemetery at Hen Gapel
Llanuwchllyn and the cemetery at Cefnddwysarn, who would be able to answer?
Would you immediately say - Jane Daniel? On her gravestone in Hen Gapel it
says that she died in 1901 aged 86 and adds that she was the daughter of
Trawsgoed and the wife of Meredith Evans. It also says that her second
husband was Robert Daniel, late of Mur Glas, Cwmtirmynach. David Robert
Daniel, son of the 2nd marriage, was born 6 May 1859.
According to the 1851 Census we see that Meredith Evans was born in
Maentwrog and described as a skinner and farmer of 118 acres living at Ty'n
y Bryn with his wife and 2 sons, Evan aged 2 and Robert 6 months. According
to the gravestone in Hen Gapel two daughters had died, Lowry in 1847 aged 3
weeks and Catherine in 1848 aged 2. Evan died in 1869 aged 20.
In Jane Daniel's obituary in Y Seren (Bala paper) in March 1903 we are told
that she was born at Dol Fach, Llanuwchllyn, and that is confirmed by
Michael D Jones' baptisms records. He christened her 14 December 1816 (she
was born November 6) the daughter of Robert Roberts and Catherine Jones.
Aged nine she moved to Trawsgoed, her mother's home and moved to Ty'n y Bryn
aged 27 and lived there for 60 years.
Her father Robert was of the Roberts family of Cwm Tylo. Her mother was a
member of the notable Trawsgoed family, her father being Tomos Jones, the
Old Doctor who died 11 April 1820 aged 81. There is information about him in
the Merionethshire Historical Transactions 1965. There are many descendants
of the Trawsgoed family in Penllyn to this day. It seems that Jane married
Robert Daniel quite soon after losing her first husband. One son of the
marriage survived. That was Robert Evans, Crynierth, a great friend of Tom
Ellis.
In 1856 Jane and Robert Daniel had a daughter Catherine who later married
Rev M O Evans and they emigrated to Cincinnatti, Ohio. They had a son and 3
daughters. The son, Arthur, often visited Welsh relatives. Robert Daniel's
mother, Mari Daves, came from Penmachno and his father's family was from
Machynlleth.
