I doubt if it's the same family but it may help to know that my mother's mother
was Ann Jones - her name on their marriage certificate. For some time I searched for her
family in north Wales (Merioneth) without success. Then I located her Welsh family bible
in which she had listed her parents and siblings. They were all listed as Thomas Jones.
Her father was Thomas Thomas Jones and his father was Owen Thomas Jones. However the
children's birth records varied. Some had the father as Thomas Jones, some were Thomas
Jones Thomas, some were simply Thomas Thomas.

Subject: [MER] JONES of Towyn
Hi everyone,
I’ve been tracing my mum’s family surname of JONES for quite a number of years now and
have never been successful in tracing them back past the 1871 census until a cousin sent
me a marriage certificate from 1869.
My 2 x great grandfather was John JONES who gave his father’s name as Jonathan JONES on
the marriage cert I mentioned above. Varying ages for John didn’t help much in pinning
down his family. I had traced a couple of famlies locally where there was a son John of
approx correct age with father Jonathan, but all subsequent censuses proved that was not
the correct family.
I came across one family in the Wales 1861 census but completely failed trying to locate
them in either the 1851 or 1871 censuses. A friend contacted me the other day and said she
thought she may have found that family in 1871, but that would only apply if Jonathan had
remarried. It soon became apparent that it was indeed the same Jonathan JONES with his 2nd
wife in 1871, and she was also able to locate him with his first wife in 1851 on Ancestry
even though his surname was indexed as JANY.
The details I know of Jonathan JONES are that he was born in Towyn, the 1861 census giving
his birth year as 1811, the 1851 and 1871 censuses give his birth year as 1815 and 1816
respectively. His first wife’s name was Ann and she was from Cardigan, and they raised
their family at Nantyglo, Monmouthshire. Their children were Benjamin 1843, John 1845,
William 1849, Maria 1852, David 1854 and Thomas 1859. On his 2nd marriage to Elizabeth
HARES in 1864, he says his father was a farmer by the name of John JONES. Shortly after
marrying Elizabeth they had a son James in 1865 and then moved to Llwynipia in
Glamorganshire where they appear in the 1871 census.
I know from
familysearch.org there are a number of Jones baptism records from Towyn, but I
don’t seem to be able to find the baptism of a Jonathan with father John. Is anyone else
out there tracing this particular family line, or can help with records from the Towyn
area please?
Very many thanks,
Jon
