The Rhug entry confirms other sources regarding the Salisbury's. Is
there anything about the smaller estates between Rhiwlas and Rhug,
e.g. Crogen and Gwerclas?
At the back of my mind are two questions: 1) The billeting of
Roundheads in Bala, as to whether or not it was forced on the
townspeople, or were there local supporters of that cause, and 2)
the origins of dissent in the Frongoch area as a local outcome of the
turmoil engendered by the Civil War.
The Committee for the Compounding of Delinquents sounds ominous.

There is a book called The Civil War in Chester and North Wales

lists the leaders in each county. Colonel Price of Rhiwlas led the
local Royalists 'army' there.
The Committee for Compounding of Delinquents only mentions fining
Salesbury of Rhug - again, I don't have the reference at hand.

Hi Peter,
What if....it was quiet in Merionethshire compared with other
places that
xperienced political and military excitement?
It might explain the lack of material.

Thanks for your replies.
Well, it seems I will have to wait for someone to view the book I
mentioned.
I do have some references to the Civil War in Merionethshire. I
will quote
two of them.
1. 'Merionethshire' by A. Morris.
Cambridge, Pocket Edition 1915.
See p150-1.
"... Vaughan suffered for his devotion to King Charles by having
his mansion
at Caergai burnt to the ground in 1645 by the Parliamentary forces."
2. 'The History of North Wales ...' by William Cathrall.
Manchester 1828.
See p278
"The Montgomeryshire Parliamentary forces invaded Merionethshire
August
21st., 1645, and lay for a week at Bala, until they were driven
out by Sir
John Owen and the North Wales men."
I would hope more has been written about this period, especially
concerning
Bala.

Peter Evans

Generally speaking that is the case.
However, as the reference 'The History of North Wales ...' by William
athrall states there was action in Bala for the week starting 21
August
645. I don't think I have seen that mentioned elsewhere.
Then I would be interested in who were the supporters of Vaughan,
and who
ere the local Parliamentarian sympathisers of the Parliamentary
forces who
nvaded Bala.

Peter Evans
