Ken,
>the Parliamentarian cause. In which case, why Caer Gai given the
Vaughan
family's other land holdings in the county? It also raises the
>>question,
as you suggest, of the political affiliations either way of the other
estates in the Penllyn area, Rhiwlas and Rhiwaeog for >>example, both of
which are strategically placed in terms of local communications and
settlement. Might also be worth investigating the >>affiliations of the Rug
estate in Edeyrnion.
Only this past weekend I came across some brief mentions of the Rhiwlas
estate.
"William Price of Rhiwlas in Merioneth bought uniforms and distributed them
among his tenants for the coming fray".
(This is given as an example of Welsh Royalist loyalty to King Charles.
Possibly the summer of 1642.) See p5 in 'The Foundations of Modern Wales
1642-1780' by Geraint H. Jenkins.
Referring to the 1650s. "To William Price, squire of Rhiwlas, Merioneth,
these were 'distempered and bedlam times'." P42 of the same book. The quote
in the book is footnoted : A.H. Dodd, Studies in Stuart Wales, p.176.
