Hi all
Further to my query of last month on the PUGHs, for which I again acknowledge all the help
I had from the list.
I have a little puzzle on my great-grandmother's father. She was Mary PUGH and married
my greatgrandfather JOHN HARVEY in Chester in 1878. The name of her father is given as
JOHN PUGH, but I am wondering whether the registrar was mixing up her husband's first
name with her father's, which I think may qctually be MEREDITH PUGH.
The reason I suspect this is that on the 1881 census she gives her birth place as
Dolgellau and her age as 25. (Her age on the marriage certificate is 23, so unless she had
a birthday between 25th March (marriage) and 3rd April (census date), there is a slight
discrepancy.) However I can find no MARY PUGH with a father JOHN in the censuses or the
BMDs to fit in with her details.
When she had her first child it was born in GELLI, LLANFACHRETH, DOLGELLAU DISTRICT, 31st
January 1879, and the informant was a MARGARET PUGH. I have had some good information
from other listers and believe I have located this place as a farm SE of Llanfachreth.
There is a family called PUGH there with a mother MARGARET PUGH and a father MEREDITH in
1861 and, amongst others, they had a daughter called MARY who was four years old. This
again gives another year's discrepancy with the age of my great grandmother who would
have been five according to the 1881 census age. I have the birth certificate for this
Mary, born 30 July1855 in Gelli, so by the 1861 census she would have been five, so the
1861 is wrong for some reason.
A kind lister gave me the 1871 details and again Mary is 14, not 15.
I have a marriage for MEREDITH and MARGARET nee ROBERTS, February 7th 1840.,
If anyone is still with me, what I am really asking is whether anyone has access to the
parish registers and could look to see if there was another MARY PUGH baptised with a
father JOHN, who fits the dates, or am I safe to assume that there is an error on the
marriage register for the father's name, and she is the daughter of MEREDITH.
I would greatly appreciate any advice or help so that I can progress with my Welsh line.
I am in Hampshire so cannot visit Dolgellau easily, but if anyone wants anything down here
in Gosport, just let me know.
Many thanks
Margaret
