Regarding your reference to Griffith Roberts, Dolgellau, the surgeon and
your comment that 'little is known'. Have you checked the National Library
of Wales website. If you use their facility to search Archives catalogued
before 1999 you will find numerous references to him, especially in the NLW
collection.

Beryl

Subject: Re: [MER] Roberts
Dear Doreen and John,
I have looked at my Roberts Dolgellau notes but they seem to pre-date the
names given in your email off list. For interest this is what I have and I
hope that you can make some form of connection. (I have posted this to the
List as others may find links).
There follow extracts from ³The Family of Isallt² published privately in
1884.
Robert ab Dafydd Fychan lived at Glasfryn, Cwmstradllyn in the parish of
Llanfihangel y Pennant, Caernarvonshire and he had two sons, Owen and Robert
(1707 1776).
Robert¹s first wife was the daughter of Abercain, Llanystumdwy and his
second wife was the daughter of Braich y Ddinas, Y Pennant. They had two
sons and a daughter. Their sons were Evan Roberts, Y Garreg Wen the father
of Robert Roberts, Y Garreg Wen and Griffith Roberts, Cae Bach (later of
Brithdir), whose descendants are numerous in Pennant and other districts
even today (1884). The second son was Dr. Gruffudd Roberts, Plas Isaf,
Dolgellau see below.
Little is known about Dr. Gruffydd Roberts, son of Robert Roberts, Isallt. A
brother of the other doctors (sic*) he settled in Dolgellau where he lived a
long life as a successful and popular doctor.
He has two sons, Gruffydd and Williams and two daughters, one of whom
married W. Williams, Y Lawnt (The Lawn), Dolgellau. The other daughter,
Betsy Roberts was unmarried.
The widow of W. Williams, The Lawn, inherited many freehold houses, but it
is not known by whom they were acquired.
The two sons became doctors: Gruffydd became a Naval doctor, but was
overcome by ill health, and came home to die.
Affixed to the wall on the left of the outer door of the Dolgellau Church is
a panel bearing the following:
Underneath are interred the remains of Margaret, wife of Griffith Roberts of
this town, Surgeon. She departed this life on the 29th day of July, 1806
aged 69 years.
Also The above named Griffith Roberts, Surgeon who departed this life on the
28th December, 1808, aged 71 years.
Likewise Griffith Roberts Junior, Surgeon, who departed this life on the
22nd of July 1815, aged 47 years.
NB
* The use of the plural here may allude to the fact that Gruffydd (or
Griffith) had stepbrothers from his father¹s third marriage to Jane Anwyl
Isaac of the Anwyl family Llanfrothen. This marriage produced five sons,
Robert Isaac Roberts a doctor who lived at Ymlwch and Ystumllyn, William
Lloyd Roberts (know as Dr. Roberts ³Oakland: Llanrwst), Owen (unmarried),
Henry (who lived at Isallt) and John who lived at Caergors, Beddgelert.
There was a daughter, Gwen who lived at Garreg Wen Y Gest and became the
mother of Dafydd Y Garreg Wen, the musician.
I hope that this is helpful, or at the very least, interesting.
With best wishes,
Barry
