Message Board Post:
I am looking for more information on the family living on Waterloo Street (Heol Y Dwr) in
Dolgellau (1841 census & directories), who evidently ran a grocery/sundries (teas)
shop there:
David Roberts, 35, Tea Dealer, born in the same county;
Catherine, 30, born in the same county;
David, 10, born in the same county;
Lewis, 10, born in the same county;
John, 4, not born in the same county.
I am trying to confirm or deny this is the same family shipping out for Boston, USA from
Caernarfon in 1846:
David Roberts, 38, male, Grocer, from Wales, to inhabit the U.S.;
Catharine Roberts, 38, female;
David Roberts, 18, male;
Lewis Roberts, 16, male;
Margaret Roberts, 10, female;
John Roberts, 8, male;
Robert Roberts, 9 mo., male;
Catharine Smith, 24, female, Servant.
The second son, Lewis, claimed he was born in 1831 in Boston, USA and that his Welsh
family returned to Wales when he was a boy. I have not found birth info for him or the
younger children in Wales or in Boston, but I did find the marriage record for David and
Catharine and the baptism of their oldest child, David Jr., in 1827 in Mallwyd parish
records. It seems sometime after David Jr. was born they migrated to Boston, then, I
believe, migrated back to Merioneth.
1) How can I determine if the family living in Dolgellau is the same?
2) How common was it during that time period for Welsh families to not just migrate to the
U.S., but return to Wales and then return to the U.S.? What were some common reasons for
this?
Thanks for any help. I have more information on the life of Lewis Roberts at my website:
