Why have copyright? If people do not want anyone to copy there work, why
publish it? Everyone should be able to benefit from everyone else, or is that to
simplified. What about a petition to ban copywrite.

I can see why people would want to protect their work from free copying. I don't think
creative people can always do it for free. People spend a lot of time, energy and money
compiling records that make our research a little easier and they aren't going to do
it for free. If you created something original, like an excellent book that would make
your life easier, do you think you'd want everyone copying it. Me, I'd publish it
expecting that every copy produced would make my life a little easier, just like any other
work.
I can also understand why someone would want to get the results of other people's
work for free. Street people live on that principal all the time.
But, regardless what I think, you'd have to get all the governments that have these
laws to change them. Not in my lifetime do I expect to see it. But I do expect to see this
petition being emailed around for years to come and, in all likelihood, the politicians
wouldn't even look at it.
