Does anyone really understand the copyright legislation? I think it's court action
waiting to happen.

in the method. And are the documents not in the public domain anyway ?
This last is supposition on my part, so obviously I'm open to correction
there. We can make notes from images on Ancestry, for example.
Nothing is free in this life, that's for sure !

Could all of this be because of copyright infringement laws? Cameras would
might also violate those laws and the people who hold the records would
still be responsible for allowing the documents to be copied. But to charge
£25 for a copy of a partial page from the 1841 census, as we were in Eire,
is ridiculous. To begin with, this is from a public document. But I wanted
the information and they had it and only they had access to it, so it's pay
or forget it. In Edinburgh, we paid for the use of a computer terminal and
microfiche. Copies of documents were charged a small amount, but the
machinery, paper, toner and operator time was worth something. And, it must
have cost a fortune to input all of the data to begin with. Nothing's free.

I think Mike John and William make a very interesting and useful point and
this
debate will, no doubt, arouse some differing points of view to my own
sincerely held. However, the question of us, as taxpayers, already paying
for these resources is a little far from the mark as first, our individual
contributions thru' tax will actually add to very little.
As ROs will photocopy or photograph records, I cannot see the added value
of
digital photography to the user unless escaping photocopying charges is
one of them.
I would worry that many users would not abuse the possibility of
photography but a
few might - can you imagine the whole NLW BT/probate
collection being available on line, for example?
If I was the owner of a resource like the NLW's collection or that of any
of
our local ROs, I would want to protect my financial interest in the
climate of efficiency, financial pressure (whether right or wrong) and other
current or possible future constraint.
