Regarding Graham & Lesley's query about GRIFFITHS of Llandrillo -
1) The publication "Llen y Llannau : Eisteddfodau 1999" [prizewinning entries
for the eisteddfodau gadeiriol for Llandderfel, Llanuwchllyn, Llanfachreth & Llangwm]
contains an essay on "Murddunod unrhyw Fro" about the ruined buildings in
Llandrillo, by Mrs Dilys Jones of Llandrillo. There is a reference to "Mount or Mount
Pleasant", translated as - "built on the only field belonging to Bryn Cilan,
half way between Bryn Cilan and Tynyffridd. Dafydd and Margaret ROBERTS and their three
children lived there in 1851."
2) I have not been able to find any reference to a Sinai/Sinah GRIFFITHS in my various
transcriptions of Llandrillo records - censuses, church records, school admissions
records.
3) No idea what "Marddyn" means.
4) Sinai/Sinah GRIFFITHS as a landowner : one way of looking into this would be to trawl
through the Probate Records post-1858 for such a name. Annual Probate Indexes are
generally available on microfiche at county records offices, also at many County Family
History Society centres (eg Clwyd, nr Wrexham). A bit tedious if you don't know year
of death, but in this case Sinai/Sinah would no doubt have been an adult in c1838 at about
the time the tithe lists were drawn up, & could well have survived the 20 yrs to 1858
when wills were dealt with on a national basis. A successful "hit" in the
probate index would allow you to order a copy of the will (£5?). Haven't looked at
probate/wills before 1858.
