Hard questions. Here are a few thoughts.
(1a) Could there have been any connection with William Tilsley JONES
of Y Gwynfryn, Llangynfelyn, which is only a few kilometres from
Borth? This bloke was eminent in the county at the time. I remembered
seeing on the Llangynfelyn site (
http://www.llangynfelyn.org/
hafan.html) that he had a wife 'Christiana' because it seemed out-of-
the-ordinary as a name. This is not the same Christiana, but it might
indicate a possible connection.
(1b) Alternatively, as Borth was a very strongly seafaring village at
the time was there any maritime connection? Any mariners in the family?
(1c) Methodist ministers wandered a bit. Could the Revd Ellis EVANS
have come from the Borth area?
(2) Perhaps 'Richard Evans (Mervinian)' was simply a way of
distinguishing him from all the other local Richard Evans (like
Richard Evans the Post) or some such. Do you know where he lived? Was
there a 'Mervinian House' or 'Mervinian Row'?
(3) No ideas on this one.

I would be very grateful for help & advice regarding Richard
EVANS &
his family.
Richard was born c1840 in Llandrillo, Merionethshire, the son of
Revd Ellis EVANS, Methodist Minister.
In August 1875 Richard, innkeeper of "Woolpack Inn, Oswestry"
married Christiana Maria JONES, "fourth daughter of Mr J JONES,
Clifton Villa, near West Felton" at Borth Calvinistic Methodist
Chapel, near Aberystwyth. [Information from marriage certificate &
marriage announcement in "Oswestry & Border Counties Advertiser"]
They appear to have had 4 sons : John (b c1877 Oswestry), Ellis
(b1879, Swan Hill, Oswestry), Irwin (b c 1882 Whittington) & Tom (b
c 1886 Whittington).
Richard died 4 Sep 1892 while a grocer at Whittington. His funeral
took place at Whittington. Christiana died 19 May 1903 at 36
Whittington Rd, Oswestry. Both their death announcements in the
local newspaper refer to "Richard EVANS (Mervinian)".
Questions : 1) Why did Richard & Christiana marry at Borth? - I
believe that her father, John JONES, was a well-established coal
merchant in the West Felton area near Oswestry.
2) What is the connection between Richard and the name Mervinian? I
believe that Richard may have been a poet - how could I find out?
3) What happened to Richard's 4 sons? I believe that Irwin EVANS may
have married Mary Ann THOMAS in the Oswestry area in 1907 [from
freeBMD].
Very much hoping that someone can help me.
