Jeff,
The railway line between Oswestry and Aberystwyth was completed during
the 1860's:
Oswestry - Newtown railway completed 1861-61
Oswestry- Ellesmere - Whitchurch railway completed 1863
Newtown - Machynlleth railway completed 1863
Aberystwyth and Welsh Coast railway completed 1863 - 1869
These companies were absorbed into the Cambrian Railway, which in turn
was absorbed into the Great Western Railway.
Borth was transformed from a coastal fishing village into a tourist
destination during this period. Large Victorian terraced houses and the
Cambrian Hotel (later Grand Hotel and even later Pantyfedwen) were built
near the station to accommodate tourists.

I can't help wondering if Cardiganshire coast, especially nr
Aberystwyth, was becoming a holiday area by the mid-1870s.
