Hello Adrian
It's not that I can give you a lot of information - I have a feeling that
Doreen & John Jones Hamilton Canada might be able to help you. From a book
on the Calvinistic Methodist cause in the area I learnt that a John Hughes
of Tai'n y foel became a leading deacon at the Cerrig y Drudion chapel in
1820 - possibly he was connected with the movement there as early as 1816.
His son was a Hugh Hughes also of Tai'n y foel who had a son called John who
began preaching in 1897 and went into the ministry. John & Hugh Hughes as
well as his son John all became deacons at Cynfal chapel, Melin y Wig during
the time they farmed at Pencraig Fawr [it dates the elder John becoming a
deacon there in 1872] . On their return to Tai'n y Foel Hugh Hughes was
elected a deacon there - date 1892. It mentions that their gain was Cynfal's
loss as he returned to the old family home.
Very many years ago while searching my family tree I was sent this
inscription from his gravestone [ there is no connection with my family
although my family had also farmed at Pencraig Fawr but prior to the Hughes
family]
Hugh Hughes/Tai'n y Foel/a fu farw Mai 7ed 1933 yn 59 oed./ hefyd/ ei annwyl
briod/ Margaret Elizabeth Hughes/ a fu farw Ebrill 18ed 1948 yn 65 oed/
this translates that Hugh Hughes died May 7th 1933age 59 / also / his dear
wife/ Mgt Elizabeth who died April 18th 1948 age 65
I was told that Mgt Elizabeth was the daughter of Jane Roberts Ty'n Rhedyn,
Cerrig y Drudion.
Perhaps someone will be able to tell you whether the same family are still
farming Tai'n y Foel or at least still living in the area
Hope this might be of some interest however
Angharad

I am new to the list and am looking for information on the ancestors
of
Hugh Evans and Mary Jones who were married in Cerrigydrudion on 9th January
1790.
Mary was born at Havoty Bron y Coed Derw on 28th April 1771. Her parents
were Ellis Jones and Elizabeth but that's all I know about them.
Hugh was born in about 1770 but I don't know his place of birth or his
parents names. He doesn't appear in the Cerrigydrudion parish baptism
records.
By the time of the 1841 census, they were living at Tain y Foel, outside
Cerrigydrudion. I have other census info for them and their descendants
until 1901, living at Tain y Foel and Pencraig Fawr, Bettws Gwerfil Goch
but would also be pleased with any other details.
Thanks
