Hi - It doesn't matter what country you are posting from. :) The system is the
system, and you need to read about it before you will understand any of what we are
talking about.
The Welsh used to use the first name of the father as the surname of the children. Tudor
Prichard's father could very likely have been "firstname" Tudor. Sometimes
they used ab or ap or mab or fab in the middle, which means "son of" (verch or
ferch for females) - and eventually they stopped using those altogether.
All you have to do to read more about this is google the words Welsh Patronymics - there
are no special sites. Here is an easy one -
http://welshpatronymics.blogspot.com/ -- or
there are a whole bunch of them on Cyndi's list.
http://www.cyndislist.com/names/patronymics/ or
http://www.amlwchhistory.co.uk/newdata/welshsurnames.htm is also another good
explanation.
The Welsh researcher should have known to tell you that - did you hire this person?
They would have more information in Wales, before people on an Ancestry message board
would, as many of us are in American and don't use Mundia or have Ancestry World. You
could spring for the World edition and use those resources, too. There are many ebooks
online about Wales and Welsh families, you may find clues about the family in them as
well.
In the meantime, the suggestions that Ken gave were very good - you can start looking in
parishes, since you know where they came from. Most of the information about families was
kept in the churches, especially the farther back you go.
Good luck -
Lynn
