Subject : Is the History of Llandderfel available?
The Journal of the Merioneth Historical and Record Society for 1991 volume
XI Part II.
In an article on 'Derfel Gadarn - A celebrated victim of the reformation' by
W. Gareth Evans.
The author says "According to a History of Llandderfel written by a former
curate of the parish in 1858
there was extant in the vestry a confessional dated 1685 stating that 'the
Roman Mass in North Wales was celebrated in this Church'. Whether or not it
referred
to the seventeenth century is uncertain." 50
The number 50 is a Reference to another article in Volume 2 for 1953-6.
p240.
This is in the journal for 1955. This half page article is by R.S. Williams,
Rector of Llandderfel.
His last sentence is "A former Curate of this Parish wrote in 1858, a
"History of Llandderfel", most of
these notes are derived from this book, which is fitted with a lock".
That curate may have been John Jones who served from 1840. Not to be
confused with
another John Jones who served 1828-1840.
Does anyone know if this history has been republished or is available?
Regards,
Peter Evans
