Hi Peter,
The History was written by a “curate” of Llandderfel. The rector when the book was
written was John Jones ("Esgobaeth Llanelwy” David Richard Thomas, 1870), but the
curate may have been another Jones. This may be Edward Evan Jones, ordained as curate in
1850, or Henry Jones, BA Jesus College, Oxford, ordained in 1854, who was replaced by J
Jennings in 1856. The Rev Henry Jones appears to have moved on to Llanyblodwel, near
Oswestry, then I lost track of him in Wales.
"Esgobaeth Llanelwy” does not mention the book either in the text or as a footnote,
so it may not have been immediately accessible at the time Thomas wrote it during the
1860’s. In "Esgobaeth Llanelwy” Thomas focuses on early records of tithes and the
treatment of the Dderfel effigy during the Reformation. As an aside, it is worth
mentioning that the Established Church was very active in this area during the 1850’s
through to the 1880’s to counter to the expansion of the non-conformist movement by the
establishment of Church Schools and the refurbishment of existing churches. This was done
in conjunction with the owners of local estates such as Crogen and Pale.
You might contact Gwynedd Archives at Dolgellau to see if there is anything about the book
in their index which is not fully online. They may charge a service fee to conduct the
search on your behalf. Check on the website about that before you send your inquiry.
Provide as many details of your search as possible including the information that you
received from me and other sources. The more they have to go on the better.
There is also the possibility that the book is in another collection! Diocese of St Asaph?
University? Private Collection? I checked the online catalogue at Bangor University but
drew a blank.

Hello Ken,
Thanks for those leads. Yes, I did check the NLW catalogue. Their reference
is quite different.
So the point should not be lost - there is another history of Llandderfel
out there.
Who is in a position to follow up this lead? I suspect someone who travels
to that area and has close connections with the area.
Regards,
Peter Evans
