Thank you for this information, Jeff. It’s encouraging to know that there is a
"Cymdiethas Dreftadaeth Y Bala a Phenllyn”, but disappointing that the group is not
on the web, even as a blog site or a Facebook page. There are dozens of groups such as
this in Wales (and other parts of the UK), who have their fingers of the pulse of what
happened in their communities, but often lack the resources to go the extra mile to
demonstrate to a wider audience what they are doing or what they have accomplished. This
makes it frustrating for those of us who live far away who might be interested in knowing
“a little bit extra” about an ancestor who lived in the area, or life and event in the
community at a point in time when ancestors lived in the area, or even to contribute
something based on their research of a particular aspect of the community or the people
who lived there.
There are people in the cultural heritage world who know the pros and cons of the options
(website/blog/Facebook) and how to set up and manage a site. It takes time to learn the
basics of good site management, but a project like this might interest someone in the
younger generation who is interested in improving their computer skills. There may even be
a City and Guilds Course that gives them a credit for the work. It’s worthwhile to explore
the possibilities given what has been accomplished already.

In recent years there have been many very interesting exhibitions at
Canolfan y Plase in Bala, and it does seem a shame that they are not
publicised more widely.
Most (all?) are organised by the local group "Cantref" (aka Bala and
Penllyn Heritage Society), which does not have a website (which is
understandable), and internet searches do not appear to give any contact
name/address etc.
Exhibitions _are_ well publicised in the local weekly newspaper "Y
Cyfnod" and also in "Pethe Penllyn" (every 1 or 2 months), but again no
contact given.
I should, perhaps (!), have realised that the organisation is better
known as "Cymdeithas Dreftadaeth y Bala a Phenllyn", and is registered
with the Charity Commission under that name - a search on the Charity
Commission website gives details of the charity, including a list of the
trustees & a contact. I guess that one needs to appreciate that Cantref
deals essentially with exhibitions and lectures in Bala, and is unlikely
to be able to respond readily to a flood of queries from all corners of
the world regarding local family history! (Gwynedd & Clwyd Family
History Societies are obvious sources, in addition to rootsweb).
The answer, I'm sure, is to become a member of Cantref.
