Brian
Two things:
(1) In case you want to know, Brian, further to Arfor's message, Bryn
Meurig is a row of three quite small cottages directly above the
railway station in Penrhyndeudraeth. That's the station for the
Ffestiniog narrow gauge railway from Porthmadog to Blaenau, of course.
The reason I know is that my late aunt used to live in the middle
cottage! (Probably not a relation of Brian's, though). My maternal
grandmother (Mary WILLIAMS 1884-1966) came from Penrhyndeudraeth, and
her parents and many siblings lived there over the period 1870 - 1920.
(2) Moreover, I wanted to take the opportunity to mention to the list
the usefulness of recording one's interests and genealogical questions
on lists like this even though you might not get an immediate
response. I posed a question about the location of a place in
Penrhyndeudraeth in 2003, where my grandmother's parents had been
living in 1871. Last week, someone doing their own genealogical
research found my question in the Rootsweb Merioneth archives and
answered it! Coincidentally, it turned out that my correspondent now
owns my late aunt's cottage at Brynmeurig. Moreover, after talking to
a few locals about my family interests and background in Penrhyn, she
has found, alive and well, an elderly lady whose older sister left
Penrhyn for Australia with my grandmother in 1914. Apparently the old
lady (who has just turned 106) remembers that everyone in Penrhyn was
a bit concerned at the time, with a war imminent! Finding a person
like that is a rather remarkable outcome, and immensely satisfying.
The moral is: make your interests known---you never know when a
connection will be made and what it will reveal.
