Message Board Post:
Ken, thanks you for your reply to my query. It appears that all postings to the
Merionethshire Message Board are copied to the Merionethshire Mail List (but NOT
vice-versa!). I'm not a list member, I just use the Board, but someone else told me
that you had replied on the Merionethshire Mail List. I eventually found the list archive
and found it! For any other interested Board-only readers, the excellent answer supplied
by Ken was:
'Rhydnelian is probably Rhyd yn Elian, as you suggest.
In the chapter on parish churches in the History of Merioneth, Volume 2, Andrew Davidson
indicates on page 334 that while the church at Betws G.G. is dedicated to St Mary
"which may have been established in the 12th century though there are traditions of
an earlier foundation dedicated to St Elian." There are other dedications to St Elian
at
Llanelian yn Rhos, near Colwyn Bay, and in Anglesey. Apparently Elian was a Breton
missionary who lived in the 6th century.
"Ford(Rhyd) in the (yn) district of Elian" makes sense as an English
translation.'
