Thank you for your suggestions. The n was supposed to come through in superscript so the
En wasn't actually the way he wrote the middle initial. It was the superscript n that
made me think it might be an abbreviation for Evan. Of course, that would only work if
the suggested lineage could be proven.
I have looked in the parish records and BTs for William's baptism, but found neither
him nor his siblings. The chapel records that the LDS have for that area are sketchy and
not helpful with any of this family.
His burial permit and death certificate both have E. His grave stone is simply FATHER but
is with his son's family in the Oriskany Cemetery in Oneida County, NY. A letter he
wrote that's in my possession is signed W[superscript m] E[superscript n] Phillips.
He left no will and I could find no probate.
In Robert Phillip's obit (Y Cyfaill) he is noted as son of William and Sarah Phillips,
of Y Parc, Sarnau, Bala and William is listed as his brother.
In the 1841 census there is a Sarah in Llanfawr (Llanfor) not Llanycil (Bala).
Llanfor - Nantlleidiog Mer Park, Sarrah PHILLIPS, 70, 1771, Independant, Yes [between
70-74 (1767-1771)
Llanfor - Nantlleidiog Mer Park, Sarrah PHILLIPS, 35, 1806, Yes [between 35-39
(1802-1806)
When I was in touch with Wales National Library they said Phillips as a surname was very
rare in north Wales. So I seem to get stuck back where I started with this person.
Best,
Jane

Subject: RE: [MER] Patronmic naming system (William Cawalader William)
There is no record of a William son of William Phillips on the IGI.
Regarding the IGI that in Wales, only the chapels are featured as the Church of Wales
did not agree to the Mormons using their records. Having said that, there is a huge
digitisation drive afoot, I believe.
If William En Phillips followed the patronymy of his time, then his father would be an
En Phillips (now I do not know what En would stand for and have not seen Evan abbreviated
like this - maybe other list members would know if Evan has ever been abbreviated to
En?).
I thought En could be Enoch but then he would be known as William Enoch Phillips! I
also wondered whether En could simply be the letter "N".
It might be worth checking a2a.org.uk for Phillips (and all variants) wills and getting
those which relate to Bala from the National Library. If not in the National Library, the
other options are PCC, Chester or Shrewsbury.
What was your ancestor's name on his burial and/or gravestone as that might help to
pinpoint the will.
Yours,
Ian
This started me wondering about a Welsh ancestor on mine who went by
the name William En Phillips. It was always just that, never a middle name. On his death
certificate his parents were William Phillips and Sarah. I have, with help, found a
possible lineage for William that might fit with this En and would like to have others
opinion on it. The lineage follows:
a.. Phylip Evan and Elizabeth of Ty Cerrig ucha, Llanycil - had:
b.. Evan Philipp bp. 20 Feb 1734, Ty Cerrig, Llanycil, married Catherine Williams - had:
c.. William Evan, bp. 28 Apr 1772, Ismynydd, Llanycil, died 1841, Hendre Mawr, Llanycil,
buried in Llanycil from Hendre Mawr (on the Llanycil/Llanfor border under the name William
Phillips. He married Sarah Roberts
possibly had three children, one of them:
a.. William En Phillips, born cal. 6 Jan 1810, d: 7 Dec 1886, age 76y 11m 1d in Oneida
County, New York, immigrated to New York 1837
?? Could William En Phillips fit into this lineage?
?? Could the En stand for Evan perhaps?
?? Could he have gone by William William in a marriage to Margaret Davies? (Right bride,
right timing, right location, one right witness, Robert Phillip) William En had a brother
Robert (obit)
Any thoughts on this would be very appreciated.
Regards,
Jane
