I was interested to read this as shipwreck on Welsh shores was, in the Welsh triads, one
of the ways to gain nationhood. I realise we are talking about a time long after the
mediaeval but I wonder whether these earlier influences survived in folk memory? I would
think that they do as there is another famous shipwrecked person who gave rise to the
bonesetters of Mon.
Yours,
Ian

Subject: [MER] Bennett family Ardudwy area.
I'm looking for descendants of the shipwrecked Italian, Jahanus Benedictus. As legend
has it, he survived the Genoan wreck which foundered in 1709 off the Barmouth coast and
settled in the Ardudwy area. He died in 1730 and was buried at Llanenddwyn or Llanddwywe.
His Son John Benedictus alias Bennett is buried at Llanddwywe together with his wife and
many of his young children. They lived at Llwyngriffri.
There are many descendants in this area who had the Bennett as a christian name, and
have had this name passed down through many generations.
Other well known descendants are Meirion Williams, the musician and songwriter eg;
'Aros Mae'r Mynyddoed Mawr' and John Henry composer of 'Gwlad y Delyn'
etc.
I am descended from John Bennett's sister Mary Benedictus alias Bennett, who married
into the Williams family of Frongaled Llanddwywe. She married William ap Robert of
Frongaled.
