Hello Ian
Yes, I have looked at the marriage bonds, for St Asaph and Bangor, and found
nothing. The children that I know about from the censuses were all born in
the Esclusham Above area, starting with Mary, baptised at the Wern Chapel 31
January 1841 and ending with Ellis bapt there on 22 April 1864. Some of the
other children were baptised at St Mary's, Minera. That's not to say that
they couldn't have been married elsewhere of course, particularly as
Margaret was from Merioneth, and I am not sure how complete the coverage of
Merioneth is on NWBMD.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Best wishes
Carol

Hve you checked St Asaph marriage bonds? All the indexes and this at the
LLGC should be seen as complimentary (coverage, even with all 3 not being
100%). Apart from that, could they have married elsewhere? Are there any
clues from childrens' birthplaces?
Yours,
Ian

Hi Maggi
No, I haven't - the 1841 census is missing for Bersham and Esclusham
Above and Below, so I can't check if they were in the locality at that
time. Robert was born in the area (baptised Wrexham 13 March 1814).
Margaret was a bit inconsistent about her place and date of birth
(ranges from 1816 to 1823), but Maentwrog featured more often than
anywhere else. I couldn't find their marriage locally so, I had a
search done on the North Wales Marriage Index for a marriage between
1830 and 1850 just in case they married elsewhere, but there was no
sign of that either. And I can't find the marriage on North Wales BMD
or FreeBMD (at least post 1837). From the censuses, Mary appears to be
their youngest child, born c1841.
So I was hoping to find something about Margaret's mother's origins,
having drawn a temporary blank with Margaret herself.
Thanks for your suggestion.
Best wishes
Carol

Hello Carol
Have you found Robert and Margaret on the 1841 census? Regards Maggi

Hello, I am new to this list and hope that someone can help me. My
family history is centred around the Coedpoeth/Minera area, but my
gggrandmother was Margaret Jones, who was born c1822 in either
Maentwrog (1851 and 1861
censuses) or Hafod Offeiriad (1871) or Corwen (1881). She married Robert
Rogers, who was a lead miner in Minera, but I haven't been able to find
the
marriage which would have been about 1840. She had her widowed
mother
living with her in Coedpoeth/Bersham (nr Wrexham) in the 1871 and 1881
censuses. Her mother was named Catherine Ellis on these censuses, which
puzzled me as Margaret's maiden name was Jones, according to her
daughter's
birth certificate. I guessed that Catherine must have been widowed
and
remarried to someone called Ellis. She gives her place of birth as Tafarn
Helyg (1871 census) and Corwen (1881). I have recently obtained
Catherine's death certificate - date of death 6 August 1884. It turns out
that she was the widow of a farmer named Humphrey Ellis. I think I might
have found her as Catherine Ellis, widow, in Ffestiniog in the 1861
census,
although it is difficult to be certain as it's a common enough
name. I
have
found various mentions of the name Humphrey Ellis around the
Maentwrog
area
on the net, and am aware that he might also be known as Ellis
Humphrey.
Does
anyone have any ideas on how I might find out more about
Catherine's
origins?
Best wishes
Carol
