Dear Derek,
I don't understand your question completely - it was common for witnesses to be
completely unrelated to either bride or groom - sometimes you will see whole pages of
marriage registers witnessed by a handful of people - probably the clerk, sexton,
whatever.
You haven't stated where your relation's father was described as living - was he
described as a schoolmaster in a particular locality? Could he even have been in England,
Scotland or Ireland?
It would be helpful for you to put down the information as it appears in the certificate -
I am afraid that looking simply for a schoolmaster might be a leap too far and push you
down the wrong track. Remember, even schoolmasters might change their occupation and the
father might be a priest running a church school so occupation = minister OR anything
else!!!!
Do you know anything which might put your family in a particular part of Wales? This
might be old correspondence, old photos, odd middle names or family stories.
Yours,
Ian Thompson

Subject: [MER] roberts/william
Whn my gt gt gt grandfather married in London in 1842 one of the witnesses was Margaret
Williams and he states that
his father was Robert Roberts school master. I have trawled the 1841 census and the only
one I have located is in Dollgelly
North Wales and he is married to Margaret Roberts and is still there in 1851 census my
problem is if the witness is Margaret Williams
was her maiden name roberts and when did she marry //// williams? I have applied for
marriage certificates but so far no luck she could have married
a mr Williams between 1839 and dec 1841 in dollgelly and her father would be Robert
Roberts. any sugestions to solve my problem.
