U.S.D. means Urban Sanitary District, a precursor of local government
(Urban District Council and Rural District Council). The USD was
responsible for the provision of a safe water supply and the disposal
of sanitary waste, and may have administered housing standards.
As to Barracks, I cannot think of a military connection but would
hazard a guess that the the building housed workers who built the
railway between Bala and Blaenau Ffestiniog, which was completed in
1882.

Can anybody help!
I have received my great grandmothers birth certificate from General
Register Office but don't know what the aboe reference means.
It shows she was born on 27 June 1881 and the location is Barracks
Bala U.S.D. Her father on her birth certificate is shown as a
labourer.
Does anybody know what Barracks Bala U.S.D may mean?
Any help greatly appreciated
