Allen,
I checked successive censuses regarding the David John Griffith (born
1845) who lived with the Williams family at Borthwen Fach in
Llanfihangel y Treaethau - the top hit on my initial list. In 1861 he
was at that location in with the same name, and then in 1871 a ditto
appears against his initials, which suggests that he could have been
a Williams all along. In 1881 he appears as David Williams. So this
is not your David J Griffith if your man emigrated to the US in 1869.
I searched the 1861 census for the David Griffith, son of Griffith
Griffith mentioned in your note without success. Better luck another
day, perhaps.

so one thing I was wondering if that the first david john griffith
maybe the
Williams were related to him some how and he stayed with them
for some unknow reason? its always so hard to say
