Hi Jeff - wow, you are a quick and efficient researcher. (You even found one of my
family's websites!)
I had not yet pulled (paid for) the 1911 census for Alfred, but did see him in the Bala
registration from the free 1911 index. There are 841 images for Bala on the 1911 census
at
Ancestry.com and they are not yet searchable. Any chance you can give me a page number
so I can get to it directly?
The address you give (10 Plasey Street, Bala) is the address that is shown on May's
death certificate. So she must be buried somewhere in the area. I'll follow up on your
suggestions. Great Aunt Beatrice (Alfred's sister) was a nurse and it makes sense
that she went to live with him to help out with baby Mabel after the death of his first
wife.
I'm familiar with the Moelfre / Llansilin / Llanyblodwel connection - I was fortunate
to visit there 7 years ago as we have lots of family connections in that area. I even got
photos of the Moelfre house.
But that area seems quite some distance from Bala? I do remember driving by Bala and
marveling at the Lake.
I'm also trying to figure out how Alfred met his second wife, Sarah Ellen Dixon in the
Bala area. She was born and raised in tiny Lowton (near Leigh), nowhere near Bala. And no
evidence that her family ever went there either. They were dirt poor and worked in the
mines. Since they married in 1915, perhaps it was related to the war? I think there was
a POW camp in/near Bala and they both may have been stationed there, although again,
I'm not finding any evidence of that. Alfred was part of the Royal Defence Guard for
Lancaster.
I'm trying to piece together some of the story behind why he went to Bala. While I
have the bare facts (birth/death/census), filling in the story is fun and challenging.
Thanks for your quick response and help! Truly appreciated. Carol
