Dear Jaq & Les,
re - request for search of NBI for James MORGAN, son of Ann (HANMER) &
Robert MORGAN, all 3 resident in Llandrillo in 1881 Census;
also re - request for info on above family on CLWYD-L (rootsweb) - I don't
subscribe to this list, but a friend passed on the details.
1) NBI is of little help in Wales, apart from Glamorganshire & a few
parishes in Cardiganshire (nothing at all in Merioneth, Caernarvon,
Anglesey, Denbigh & Flint).
2) NBI shows no James Morgan born c1879 as buried in Cheshire, Lancs,
Staffs, Derbyshire.
3) Your CLWYD-L reference to "marriage took place in Corwen Dec 1878
according to GRO records" is likely to be misleading. This information
probably comes from the quarterly marriages indexes, & simply shows that
the marriage was registered in the 4th quarter of 1878 in the Corwen
registration district - this district covered quite a large area &
certainly included Llandrillo. Suggest you order copy of marriage
certificate (£6.50) - this would give you date & place of marriage, ages
of bride & groom, together with their occupations, & names & occupations of
their fathers; names of witnesses might also be of some interest.
4) In 1881 the family is shown as living in Fairclough Terrace, Garthiaen,
Llandrillo. Garthiaen is one of 8 townships in the parish of Llandrillo.
With Robert MORGAN born Llandrillo 1856, one would naturally look for him
in the Llandrillo censuses of 1861 & 1871. Definitely not there in 1871
(gone to Ruthin??), while the 1861 census for Llandrillo is (as for many
other areas) very incomplete - the 2 largest townships (Garthiaen &
Faerdref) are missing, so only about half the population is shown - Robert
not shown.
5) Other local records that I have transcribed show nothing to help, eg
church marriages, church baptisms, school admissions register (from 1864).
Nothing in church burials either : note that all Llandrillo burials were in
the churchyard until c1899 when the new cemetery was opened - even
nonconformist burials (in the churchyard) are recorded in the church
burials register. There appear to have been very few MORGAN(S) in
Llandrillo in the 1800s; in the censuses many of them were shown to have
been born in Llandderfel.
Final suggestion must be that you get copy of 1878 marriage certificate &
move on from there.
Best wishes,
Jeff Delves
