Dear Tony,
1) Llandrillo yn Edeyrnion Parish Registers (1662-1812/25) have been
transcribed & published in 4 volumes by Clwyd Family History Society.
2) Vol 4 pg 28 shows : 5th [sic] September 1795, marriage by licence of
Thomas FRANCIS of Pennant, bachelor, & Jane ROBERTS of this parish,
spinster; witnesses - David ROBERTS & Anne ROBERTS.
3) Vol 3 pg 17 : 22nd [sic] January 1796, baptism of Thomas FRANCIS son of
Thomas & Jane of Blaen y Cwm.
4) Vol 3 pg 40 : 29th April 1801, burial of Jane Frances [sic - NB both
spelling & lower case letters].
5) Vol 3 pg 22 : 12th December 1804, baptism of Thos. ROBERTS b.8 son of
John & Jane of Blaen y Cwm.
6) Vol 3 pg 17 : 31st [sic] May 1794, baptism of Hugh HARISON [sic] son of
William & Eliz. of Ty'n Nant. [NB no baptism shown for 21st May 1794; the
only FRANCIS shown in index is as in reference 3) above]
7) Blaen y Cwm referred to in Llandrillo parish registers will be the farm
of that name at the south end of the Ceidiog valley. Admittedly it doesn't
help when both this valley and the valley at Pennant Melangell are known as
'Cwm Pennant', and also both valleys have farms called Blaen y Cwm. At
least they are in different parishes & different counties. I walked to
Blaen y Cwm from the village in Llandrillo a few weeks ago.
8) Blaen y Cwm is likely to have been a single dwelling c1800. The above
references show the FRANCIS family living there in January 1796, & the
ROBERTS family in December 1804, ie nearly 9 years later. No great surprise
here : both tenant farmers & more especially agricultural labourers moved
around quite a bit.
9) In view of death of a Jane Frances in Llandrillo in April 1801, are you
sure that your reference to baptism of Edward FRANCIS son of Thomas & Jane
of Blaen Gwnnodl, Llangar, in September 1805 is 'your' FRANCIS family?
Consider the possible scenario of Thomas marrying Jane in September 1795
when she is nearly 5 months pregnant; baby born at her parents' home,
rather than at Thomas & Jane's home back in Pennant, MGY; Jane dies 5 years
later in 1801.
10) I have met a ROBERTS of Tunbridge Wells who claims to be descended from
ROBERTS of Blaen y Cwm, Llandrillo, in the early 1800s.
Hope this is of some help.
Best wishes,
Jeff Delves
(Resident both in East Anglia [Suffolk] & Llandrillo - descended from
ROBERTS of Llandrillo)
