Dear Helen,
The time scale of a Story of Two Parishes is from the bronze age to the
1920s. Although the book concentrates on the older aspects of history with
only a fairly romantic description of the then "curent" situation. It is an
interesting little book, which has unfortunately been out of print for very
many years. It is occasionally still to be found in car-boot sales and second
hand book shops. Sadly there are no references in it to the Pugh family of
Hafod y Morfa.
As so many have shown an interest in a Story of Two Parishes since I put it
on he Lookup exchange last week, I shall suggest to the local printer that it
may be worthwhile reprinting it!
I was interested in your family connections. I am a Humphreys (descendant of
Griffith Humphreys of Ganllwyd Llanelltyd) and my mother was a Griffith (from
Barmouth), my maternal grandmother was a Jones of Vrondeg Llanelltyd
All the best,
Alwyn ap Huw

I saw today The Story of Two Parishes Dolgelley & Llanelltyd. on the
Merionethshire look up exchange and I hope you don’t mind me mailing you to
ask roughly what time scale it covers. I see that it was published in 1928,
just a couple of years before my mother, Lilian Pugh, was born in
Taichynhauf. Many generations of my Pugh(e) family were born and buried in
Llanelltyd, and to a lesser extent, Dolgellau, so I really hope I can find
myself a copy somewhere. My parents were married at Llanelltyd in the 1950’
s. I do whatever I can to get a full picture of what life has been like for
my ancestors, so I’d love to learn more, even if nothing in it relates to
them directly.
Apart from Pugh(e) my ancestors names, from the Llanelltyd region, have
been
Ellis, Williams, Evans, Griffith(s), Humphrey(s), James, Jones, and
Roberts.
A large group of my Pugh family left for America in 1841, leaving
the
eldest
son, Robert Pugh at Hafod y Morfa. I am the g g g granddaughter of
Robert
Pugh. I was, unfortunately, born in England, but I get to Llanelltyd and
Dolgellau as often as I can. They are my favourite places and, strange to
say, I know, but I always feel like I’ve gone home. Another trip is well
overdue!
Very best wishes,
Helen
