Hi Stan,
No real connection, but a lot of similarities of place. I do have two
lots of Roberts, but I don't see an immediate connection, .
The first Roberts family was from Ffestiniog: My 2xg-grandmother was
Margaret Roberts, born 1813 in Ffestiniog, the daughter of Robert
Roberts and Catherine Davies. She married Owen Owen in Ffestiniog in
1835, and their son John Owen, born 1849, was my g-grandfather. From the
age of 8 he began to work in the slate quarries, and in the late
1860s/early 1870s moved east for a time to be a foreman in the Moel
Fferna quarry. He seems to have stayed in Corwen, and was married in
1872 in Corwen to Ellin Lloyd, daughter of William Lloyd, a farmer in
Llantysilio-yn-Ial. A couple of years after their marriage John and
Ellin Owen moved back west, to Blaenau Ffestiniog, where they lived (and
eventually died) in a house at 2 Cwmbowydd Road! My grandmother was
married from there, in the Maenofferen Chapel.
The second Roberts family are from the Gwyddelwern/Corwen/Llangar area:
Ann Roberts was the wife of William Lloyd (married Bryn Eglwys 1841) and
the mother of Ellin Lloyd mentioned above. Her birthplace was given in
different censuses as Gwyddelwern, Corwen and Llangar, and I now think
she was probably born in one of the townships of Gwyddelwern which were
later (in 1854) transferred to Llangar, but think that her mother may
have been living in Corwen possibly from the 1820s. She named her two
eldest daughters Jane and Mary, names which were not in the Lloyd
family, and I believe they may have been the names of her mother and
either a step-mother or older sister. I have found an Ann Roberts,
daughter of John Roberts and Jane born in Llangar in 1812, which is not
too far removed from the year of 1811 I would have expected from the
ages given for her in most of the Censuses. I am looking for descendants
of possible siblings of Ann Roberts to try to confirm all this.
In trying to find Ann Roberts' parents, I have looked at a large number
of Roberts Wills and have noted Roberts entries in the 1841 and 1851
Censuses, including some, I think, for Llangollen. I will have a look
and see if anything fits with your names.
Best wishes,
Ann
