Hi Catherine
Still doing some research in to John Richards - best match I've narrowed down,
assuming neither your John R nor John R left the county of Meirionethshire narrows it down
to three:
Lewis John Richards born abt 1801 died Jan 1869 - Dolgellau, Merionethshire
John Richards born abt 1792 died April 1869 - Bala, Merionethshire
John Richards born abt 1793 died Oct 1871 - Bala, Merionethshire
I think we can safely assume that John Richards Brynmelyn Llanuwchllyn pa Llanfor/Llanfawr
never left Meirionethshire and lived in Brynmelyn with his family in 1851:

the family later moved to Plas Deon and John dies there in 1869,leaving Mary Richards an
82 yr old widow by 1871 with daughter and grand-daughter:

There are other John Richards alive in this period but none of the others live in
Meirionethshire except for one John Richard born about 1796 and died Oct 1869 -
Dolgellau, Merionethshire
Just a case of going through each one and eliminating them as we go along.
Question is - did your John Richard(s) live all his life in Meirionethshire and did he die
in Bala or Dolgellau ?
This might help though - a map of Meirionydd:

Details of Dolgellau Record Office:

Hope this help
Kind Regards
Iwan
