Hello Julie,
Thank you for the explanation of Upstate - I think I am getting a better
idea of places over there. I will have to look through my ancient
National Geographics and see if there is anything about Utica. After
sending my first email, I found a website with lots of transcribed
Cemetery inscriptions - what a wonderful resource! - but have not found
any Ephraims yet, though I think I have tried all the transcribed
cemeteries in the places you mentioned. I can't help wondering if this
is where some of my other missing relatives went.
What I would like to do is to try to trace any descendants of my Ephraim
relatives who went to Utica about 100 years ago. Some of them came over
and visited other Ephraims in the Ffestiniog area twenty or more years
ago, so I think they may be interested in their roots. Though in fact I
am more closely related to them than the people they visited, even
though I don't have the name Ephraim. Old Mrs Ephraim who is mentioned
in the web page about a murder that happened near the Ephraim farm in
Ffestiniog in the 1890s was a first cousin of my g-grandfather John
Owen.
Best wishes,
Ann

Utica, Remsen, Rome, Steuben are all in close proximity of each other and
had lare numbers of Welsh immigrants. Defining the term 'upstate' I have
always found to be challenging as NY is an oddly shaped territory. It
includes the upper arm of the state on its eastern side. If you locate the
state capital Albany and draw a line almost directly west of it(and slightly
north)you would find Utica approximately 1 1/2 hours driving distance from
Albany. I live in Syracuse - Utica is about midway to Albany. My welsh
ancestors settled in Rome primarily but some in Utica. There is a St.
David's society in Utica to which I belong but they are not overally active
in genealogy. I do visit the area frequently and am pretty familiar with it
- perhaps I can help you with your search. What are you looking for
exactly?
