Yes, I am searching for a Merionethshire Evans family !
1875 On 8 December 1875 Jane Evans (54) died at Bryn Dovey, Dinas Mawddwy from an
‘umbilical hernia, disease of stomach.’ A search in 1987 for her grave in the village
cemeteries was fruitless. Bryn Dovey is a row of cottages in the main street with back
gardens sloping steeply down to the river Dovey. On her death certificate her husband,
John Evans, was described as an ‘engineer.’ Her death was registered in March 1875 by
Catherine Rowlands, who was present at the time.
1877 On 12th January 1877 Catherine Elizabeth Evans (20) of 74 Regents Park Road married
Victor Youatt (24) of 128 Regent’s Park Road) at Haverstock Chapel. The Minister was John
Nunn, and the witnesses Joseph Henry Sabin and George Youatt. Catherine’s father, John,
previously described as an engineer, is recorded on the marriage certificate as
‘gentleman.’
1882 On 14th September 1882 Kate (25) died of typhoid fever and bronchitis at 128 Regent’s
Park Road, leaving Victor with two young children, Mamie (4) and Jack (2). In her fever
before she died Kate reverted to speaking Welsh, so that poor Victor could not understand
what she was saying to him.
Kate was my great grandmother. I cannot find her birth registration for 1857 (Census says
Lambeth) and John Evans is such a common name, that I reckoned my best chance was to find
an engineer whose wife died in Dinas Mawddwy.
