Subject: [MER] Welsh Mariners
Here is a new site which I am sure will be of interest to a number
of
listers:
http://www.welshmariners.org.uk/index.php
It is a database of many thousands of Welsh Mariners, including about 650
or
so Merionethshire born people
As an example of what is available here is a short extract (which may be
of
particular interest to Mike Barrow):
BARROW Hugh [Barmouth] MER
[Drowned on Friday 13 Jan 1843 whilst serving as Master of the 'Edwin' of
Chester, vessel lost on Barmouth Bar in a great storm. One boy survived;
the
event was witnessed by onlookers on shore who could offer no
assitance. A
pilot had been landed on the vessel on Thursday. Hugh Barrow was the son
of
William and Jane Barrow, late of Barmouth. Hugh Barrow loss was a
great
loss
to the 'Welsh' cause in Dublin. (The son of the preacher Hugh
Jones of
Towyn
was also drowned). Y Drysorfa, 1843, p128.]
