Diolch, Alwyn
I thought I had exhausted the usefulness of the LDS 1881 census through
helpful lookups others have provided, but on the contrary I have had some
success using the on-line version.
In particular, I was trying to track down my gggrandfather, Evan WILLIAMS.
All I have is a piece of paper that has his name and 'Geest Fan, Cynwyd'. It
lists his children, among whom is Edward WILLIAMS, Llandderyl (sic), which I
took to be 'Llandderfyl'. His wife is not listed. This record looked like a
transcription from someone's memory, written by someone whose written
Cymraeg isn't too good.
I had no dates for Evan, but searching using a broad estimate of his birth
year soon brought me to an Evan WILLIAMS, widower, Gist Faen, Llandderfel,
farmer of 8 acres and ag. Lab., living alone (at least on census night).
Then I discovered the usefulness of the 'next household' feature. That
helped satisfy me that 'Gist Faen' is indeed Cistfaen, about two km
north-west of Llandderfel, visible on the Explorer 255 Ordnance Survey 1:25
000 map of Llangollen & Berwyn.
His widowhood sits well with someone not remembering his wife, in my written
record.
Then, another success. One of his daughters was listed as 'N.M. Margaret Tyn
Cae Mawr', no dates. If 'N. M.' meant 'not/never married' then she
might be
traceable by her maiden surname.
Bingo! There was Margaret Williams, unmarried, 21, at 'Tyn Caemawr',
'Llandrillo - Garthiaen'. Moreover, she was keeping house for uncle, Evan
EVANS, 50, farmer of 91 acres. That suggests her deceased mother was
probably an 'EVANS'. The possible start of another line to trace.
This might not be of value to anyone but I was so pleased I just had to
mention it ...
