As a follow on from my reply to Phillys about her Rowlands family in Tywyn, I
had an afterthought, that I should explain how I managed to put her 8
Rowlands people into a possible family group, separate from the other
Rowlands families in Tywyn mentioned in the 1901 census on-line index.
The HTML code (the code that instructs computers how to display a web site)
for the 1901 census site contains ID numbers for all the transcriptions and
images accessible from each page called up. People enumerated together tend
to have transcriptions with consecutive ID numbers and identical image
numbers.
There is a free programme and a free Excel macro available both of which
extract this information from the HTML code and enable you to sort people
into groups of consecutive transcription numbers and identical image numbers.
(Of the two, I prefer the Macro).
The programme can be downloaded from this URL:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/CensusSoftware/
Or the Macro from:
http://www.leedsindexers.co.uk/Internet_Tools.htm#1901Extractor
These are very useful finding aids, and are almost essential for working out
which John Jones, etc. is yours, they do not however negate the need to
purchase the census details to confirm relationships.
all the best
Alwyn
