Hello List,
I am a new subscriber from Australia.
My Welsh interest is Humphrey JONES who left England 19 November 1862 (age
35), arrived SA 15 February 1863 aboard Morning Star with wife Margaret
(apparently nee DAVIS) (age 28) and three young children William, Sarah and
Mary Jane. Seven more born in South Australia. Mary Jane JONES is my great
grandmother.
I can find no details of the family in Wales. It was mentioned they were
from Glamorgan but cannot find no trace there.
As they left Birkenhead which I believe is in Liverpool and not that far
from Merioneth I am looking here now. Humphrey worked in the Copper Mines at
Wallaroo when he arrived in South Australia. I once read that someone
brought Welsh copper miners over specially to work these mines.
I am hoping perhaps Humphrey followed some mines around Wales. I have found
a possible birth for him in Llanycil, Merioneth on 31 January 1827 but their
are countless more in a 5 year period throughout Wales.
I wonder if someone has access to the Census of 1861 (the year before he
left for Australia) and therefore all the family are on it somewhere can
look up my elusive family that I have been trying to find the origins of for
nearly 20 years.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance and have a nice day!
